Capri

A popular resort town in Compania but also look off the shopping streets

 

Capri, a picturesque island located in the Gulf of Naples with a rich and diverse history. It became a Greek colony and then a resort for emperors during the early years of the Roman Empire.

The island has natural beauty, that includes the famous Blue Grotto a sea cave illuminated by an extraordinary blue light. Two mountain slopes define the island’s topography: Monte Solaro in the west and Monte San Michele in the east. There are two towns on the island: Capri and Anacapri. They were established in the 10th century when people moved from inland to avoid pirate raids.

Emperor Augustus lived on the island, and his successor Tiberius built several villas, the most famous of which is Villa Jovis, whose impressive remains are still visible today.

Capri is a very popular resorts in southern Italy - afterall it has magnificent scenery, a mild climate, and rich history. There is more to see on the island than the upper town of Capri - which sometimes is the only location being sought.

 

You catch one of the many boats to Capri from the dock in Amalfi. They will take you to Marina Grande and from there you can ride the funicular from the harbor to the top or walk up along the small walkways. There is lots of walking to do if you wish, take the funicular for the five minute ride. We booked a boat trip around the island which was very pleasant, more so than visiting the upper town. The trip through the faraglioni, the jagged laval stacks is a great trip.

At the top is the town of Capri and there you walk the crowded streets with incredibly priced stores. Retail has taken over and it is not really a quaint old town any more.

Have a lunch and take in the sights. The Carthusian monastery of San Giacomo is open in the mornings. The small cloisters date from the 15th Century and the larger ones from the 16th Century.

When you get to the top, I think the best views are looking away form the commerical centre, out over the water.

Our take on Capri is that yes it is very scenic, but a day trip will do you.
