The city of Caserta (35 km from Naples) in the Region of Compania, is known for the baroque Royal Palace of Caserta, the main residence of the King of Naples. It is the largest palace, built in Europe during the 18th Century, and the largest formal residence in the world, it has been designaed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. A massaive palace, extensive gardens with fountains. Travel by train is very easy as the palace sits right across from the train station. Work stated with Charles VII of Naples, later Charles III of Spain, who in the end never spent a night in the palace as he abdicated in 1759 to become the King of Spain. work carried on the Charles's son and successor, Ferdinand IV of Naples.

We have been to Caserta twice. If you drive, there is parking very close to the palace, off on the side. Just follow the signs. You can also take the train, the station is right across from the front of the palace. Frequent trains to Caserta.
The gardens are massive, a Baroque extension of formal vistas which stretches for 120 hectares, partly on hilly terrain. It was inspired by the park of Versailles. Walking is enjoyable but on one of our visited we rented a horse-drawn carriage to take us from one end to another of the park. A comfortable way to tour the very large garden area.
