An ancient town
Casal il Leccio
Collicello was for centuries the most distant Amerino (now known as Amelia) bastion to oppose the nearby dominions of Todi. A few hundred meters from the town was the Canale castle, an ancient possession of the Chiaravalle family from Todina. Collicello is one of the Amerino castles that has most intactly preserved its medieval appearance, modern buildings being very rare in its territory.

Collicello
Today Collicello retains its surrounding walls in excellent condition, with an entrance door characterized by an external ring arch in tanning stone and its beautiful eight guard towers, one of which faces in the direction of the now destroyed Canale castle. Inside the parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista there are interesting frescoes, located in the apse, depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints Michael the Archangel and John the Evangelist, with a view of Collicello. This work was created in 1948 by the Tuder painter and decorator Benedetto Cascianelli.
Descriptions of the town say the ancient walls, the entrance gate, and eight towers are still in good conditions and then do not miss Castel Eagle built in the thirteenth century.
Only a single arch remains of the medieval bridge built in the 11 and 13 C to cross the Rio Grande. The road follows the former Roman road the via Amerina. It is just below the Abbaye/Churche of Santa Maria Canale.
The castle was own by the powerful Chiaravalle Family. Pope Pius II ordered/invited the towns of Ameila and Todi to destroy the Ghibellines castle to end their rule of terror.

The gate and walls are gone and two low towers remain. The 14th C church was updated in the 1800s with a new facade.
A charter in 1305 refers to Frattuccia and the building of the castle. It was not built where the current castle stands, but on a hearby hill. The castle was a regular site of batters between the Atti (Guelphs) and the Chiaravalle of Todi (Ghibellines). All that remains of the original castle is a short section of the city wealls and a square tower, now a ruin.
