Urbino

Considered a Renaissance gem in the Le Marche Region

Not just another hill-top town in the hills of Le Marche, Urbino is a treasure because of its history and stand the test of time. A town of cobblestone streets and the Ducal Palace - Italy’s first ducal residence. The palace holds an extensive art collection. Urbino’s historic center is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the alleys, courtyards, and piazzas.

In our early days we had tight travel agendas and would sometime be in a town for just a day. We don't travel like that anymore. Our day in Urbino was devoted pretty much to the Palazzo Ducale - time well spend, but there was much more to see. In 2023, when we were staying in Gubbio, we headed out to return to Urbino but the roadway from Gubbio to Urbino was closed and the trip was not possible.

Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale): In 2023 I toured the Palazzo Ducale Gubbio only to findout it is based on the Ducale Palazzo in Urbino - the two cities were under the same family. The Urbino Palazzo is considered an architectural masterpiece, sitting atop the hill, it is considered the heart of Urbino. A tour was required and we were fortunate to have a very knowledgeable guide take us through the complex and provide very interesting information. The courtyards, galleries, and chambers are so impressive. I remember the Studiolo of Federico da Montefeltro, a private study adorned with intricate intarsia woodwork. He had an exact duplicate made for the Palazzo in Gubbio.

Urbino Cathedral (Duomo di Urbino): The cathedral has a majestic dome and the interior houses work of famous Italian artists.

Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista: This small chapel to has frescoes painted by Raphael. There are delicate colors and biblical scenes.

Albornoz Fortress (Fortezza Albornoz): a medieval fortress has guarded Urbino and has a dramic ivew of the valley.

Piazza della Repubblica: is the central square for Urbino. Have a drink at a café, take in the Fontana del Leone. Surrounding buildings include the Palazzo del Collegio Raffaello.

Church of San Francesco: A Franciscan church with a Gothic facade. Inside are frescoes.

Via Bramante: check out the view from this seat at sunset. Walk along Via Bramante for a breathtaking panorama - the terracotta rooftops, rolling hills, and distant Apennine Mountains.
